Answers, in short

సంక్షిప్త సమాధానాలు
Q1.I got US citizenship. Do I lose my Indian citizenship automatically?

Yes. India does not allow dual citizenship, so acquiring another country’s citizenship automatically ends your Indian citizenship. You are expected to surrender your Indian passport and then apply for an OCI card , which restores most of your rights (except voting and buying agricultural land).

Q2.How long does an OCI application take?

Typically 4–8 weeks after submission through VFS, depending on the country and season. Renewals after a new passport are usually quicker.

Q3.Do I need to re-issue my OCI every time I renew my passport?

Re-issue is mandatory once, when your passport is renewed at any point up to age 20, and once after age 50. Between those, updating the new passport details is recommended but simpler.

Q4.Can I open an Aadhaar as an OCI cardholder?

Yes, but only after residing in India for 182 days or more in the previous 12 months and then enrolling for Aadhaar . NRIs with an Indian passport do not need to meet that residency requirement.

Q5.Do I need to file Indian tax returns as an NRI?

If you have any Indian-source income (rent, interest on NRO, dividends, capital gains) above the basic exemption, yes — file through the Income Tax e-filing portal . NRE and FCNR interest is tax-free in India, but may be taxable in your country of residence.

Q6.Can I keep my old savings account in India?

No. As soon as your residential status changes to NRI, your resident savings account must be converted to an NRO account. Continuing to operate a resident account is a FEMA violation.

Q7.Do I need a visa if I have an OCI card?

No. The OCI card itself functions as a lifelong multiple-entry visa for India, as long as it’s valid alongside your current foreign passport.

Q8.Which is better for savings — NRE or FCNR?

NRE is best if you’re comfortable holding rupees and want to move money in/out easily. FCNR is best if you want to avoid exchange-rate risk on a fixed deposit — the money stays in USD/GBP/etc.

Q9.Can my parents in India operate my NRO account?

Yes — you can add them as a mandate holder or Power of Attorney for limited operations (deposits, cheque issuance for local payments). Most banks have a standard NRI POA format.

Q10.What should I do first when moving abroad from India?

Update your KYC and residential status with your bank (convert savings to NRO, open an NRE), inform your mutual fund and stockbroker, and keep your PAN and Aadhaar mobile numbers active. Later, apply for OCI if you take foreign citizenship.
